The Critters of the St Johns River

The Limpkins were sounding off all along the St Johns River this morning while a Purple Gallinule was poking his head out of the thick vegetation. Great Blue Herons, Little Blue Herons switching from their white to blue phase, Ospreys, Great Egrets and Snowy Egrets were all out looking for a meal. We had a close encounter with a Manatee and watched a Snowy Egret riding on its back picking off the minnows that the Manatee scared up for him. What a great relationship! In the spring run where the water becomes crystal clear the fish were plentiful. We saw Longnose Gar, Mullet, Catfish, Tilapia and a few giant Grass Carp. It’s truly like kayaking over the top of an aquarium. Today was a beautiful day spent paddling with some great new friends.
